That is why we alone can't read the Bible.
We must have supernatural help.
Reading the Bible is something that is absolutely necessary as a Christian. How can you proclaim your faith from the mountain tops if you haven't even read the book? This is like writing a book report on a book you've never read. Sure you can do it, but you have zero credibility. Scripture is radiant with God's glory and divine wisdom and there is so much to learn from it, and it isn't our ignorance that is our hindrance, it is this pervasive human condition that has been planted deep with in our souls since the fall of man. Rebellion, also known as a hardened heart.
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. (Ephesians 4:17–18)
We impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. . . . We have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. (1 Corinthians 2:6–7, 12–13)
Incline my heart to you, not to prideful gain or any false motive.
Open my eyes to behold wonderful things in your word.
Unite my heart to fear your name.
Satisfy me with your steadfast love.
When you read the Bible, you shouldn't read it alone. You should invite the Holy Spirit in to help you because there is something deep happening, something glorious, something far bigger and greater than reading words on a page. It is life changing power being contained between two flimsy covers because they are the infinite wisdom and literal words of God. And you are holding it in your feeble, shaky, flesh filled hands. Wow, powerful stuff dude.
