It is so incredibly easy to fall into the trap of thinking that this world is eternal.
I have.
Everyone will tell you it is. The lifetime warranties, the indestructible phone cases, the guaranteed-to-make-him-swoon lip glosses. This world will make you think that technology, fashion, and media possesses more worth than you. That the only way people will like you is if you wear this, post this, or buy that.
Wanna hear something cool though? I found my worth when I realized I wasn't worthy. How crazy is it to think that you already have someone who likes you. Not only likes you but is head over heels in love with you. And not just a simple love, a love rather that we can't comprehend, this love that He has for us is an infinite love that goes far beyond anything that we can think of. A guy so far out of your league is pursuing you daily, loving you daily, giving everything that he has for you on the reg. He looked at you and thought, "Yeah, I'd trade Heaven for Madison." He traded the ultimate paradise for me. He saw His precious daughter and said, "I'll die on this cross so that one day we can be in Heaven together." How stinkin' cool is that?
For some reason, it is so easy for me to measure my worth by human interactions. I'll literally talk to a complete stranger for 2 minutes and if I catch even the slightest bit of annoyance my self-worth seems to go down. I will never see them again yet I let them handle one of the most precious and sensitives gifts God has equipped us with, our confidence. I try to gain this from friends, family, and complete strangers, and it ends up being an emotional rollercoaster. As humans we can not get our worth from other humans, we are inconsistent by nature. We need to gain confidence from the person who gave it to us in the first place. We were designed to be sinners, saved by grace, so why do we have this made up scale where the value of inconsistent human opinions outweighs the everlasting truth that God speaks. Their opinions fail me every time as they should. I nor you were created to find assurance in worldly possessions, but in the everlasting truth that God speaks.
We stick God in our back pocket for the temporary satisfaction that this world gives us. God knows all about temporary satisfaction. What if Jesus said, "Nah you know what? I think I'm going to stay here in Heaven and not go die on the cross because you know what? I'm pretty satisfied with this comfy seat right next to the God of the universe." If that's not satisfaction then I don't know what is. Jesus traded His comfy seat for nails in His wrists, His angels for an audience mocking and spitting in His face, waiting for His death, and God to His right for Barabas the Murderer. He traded His comfort so that you could spend eternity with Him because He knew that you would never be able to trade your temporary happiness.
Let us be reminded of His love. A God that holds an infinite capacity for love, one that is not swayed by sin, but is anchored in truth. Though we cannot see this we are surrounded by it. We are surrounded by a love that is consuming us yet we can't even begin to understand it. We will not be able to achieve this love by ever being good enough because this love that God possesses is not circumstantial. This ceaseless love is incomprehensible. He doesn't love you more or less than any other creation that He has made. We have achieved an unachievable love by being sinners saved by grace. Don't take advantage of this gift. He traded Heaven for you.
You will find your worth when you realize you aren't worthy.
